Generally speaking, there are often a lot of naturally gluten free options in mexican food, as they use a lot of corn instead of wheat for their tacos and nachos. We visited La Choza on a Monday lunchtime for my friends birthday a few weeks back, it’s a really popular restaurant in Brighton so knew it was quite difficult to get a table without a wait. We arrived at around 12:30 which was perfect timing and we got a great little table near the window. The restaurant itself is very tiny, and doesn’t faff around with fancy decor, however its brightly coloured and full of character. It was voted one of the UKs best ‘cheap eats’ in the Observer Food Monthly awards!
Their menu is allergen friendly, and clear to work out. With the mains, firstly you choose the base you want, gluten free options include soft corn tacos, tostadas or a burrito bowl. Then you choose your filling, I asked the waitress about gluten free and she said they all were apart from the fish as it was battered, I went for the homemade mexican chorizo. Then you choose your salsa, I went for the cooked chipotle salsa which wasn’t too hot but still gave the desired kick you need with mexican food.
We made the mistake of ordering nachos to start, which were absolutely insane, if you are a nacho fan then you have to order these as they were my favourite part of the meal. However it was quite a lot for two of us to share as a starter, and by the time our mains came we were already feeling full! Next time I think I will just order the nachos.
I can’t recommend this place enough, its great quality authentic mexican street food which is amazing value for money. Service is great and fast, and you can take away too, perfect if your office is around the corner!
